With less than 2 weeks to PodCamp Ireland to go, we’ve lots to discuss at the planning meeting this week.

One of the things I know I have been forgeting in the last couple of weeks is using our hash tag for PodCamp Ireland that Bernie set up.

Hashtags are like tags on Flickr, only added to your post and can help track conversations online about Hashtags were developed as a means to create “groupings” on Twitter.

The hash tag for Podcamp Ireland is #pci and you can see the summary here.

If you plan to use hashtags in your Tweets, make sure that you follow @hashtags on Twitter so that it will index your updates.

That will make it easy for people if they Twitter during the event with their thoughts and feedback about the speakers presentations to access a summary. I’ve found this really helpful when there have been events I have not been able to attend but others have live Tweeted their insights from a conference.

And why not set up a hash tag for an event you are organising or taking part in?

ShareThis

One community that I was delighted to see get established is the Girl Geek Dinners where some VERY COOL women get together - all of whom share a common interest in technology.

Their next dinner is set for Tuesday, August 26th in Dublin. The location is still to be confirmed by Martha Rotter the highly connected and self proclaimed geek girl who is the facilitator of the dinners here in Ireland.

You will have to pay for your own dinner and drinks, but the bubbling conversation is free!

You can register to be on the mailing list for notifications of future dinners - and they are heading around the country - rumour has it that super duper web designer Sabrina Dent is scouting out a venue for the September event in Cork.

I also understand that at previous dinners men are welcome and you don’t need to wear a skirt - short shorts will do!

In this first show from the Podcamp Ireland team our guest is Johnny Beirne of Downloadmusic.ie.

Johnny shares how Downloadmusic.ie are using social media as a no cost marketing strategy.

We also give you the low down on where we are up to with planning this year’s PodCamp Ireland.

We had some challenges with Bernie’s phone lines - but we hope you can forgive us that especially as it was the first show. I do think you will get some great insights about how to use social media in your business to market especially if you are on a small budget from the information Johnny shares in his interview.

Oh and we were joined by our youngest listener yet - you’ll hear Bernie’s 9 month old daughter on the show gurgling away (no it’s not my baby - 3 daughters are enough for me).

SHOW NOTES

00.00 Introduction to the show

00:06 Interview with Johnny Beirne of Downloadmusic.ie covering how Downloadmusic.ie have used MySpace.com, Bebo.com, Facebook.com and mobile marketing to build awareness and market their new business

00:26 The importance of storytelling and how tat connects to PodCamp Ireland 2008

00:30 About PodCamp Ireland 2008

If you are starting to learn about social media, you will no doubt have come across the word tags - a key word or term that you can use to help you sort and classify content. You might even have seen some people with tag clouds on their blogs.

Well thanks to Sinead Cochrane I’ve just come across a really cool tool called Wordle that helps you create ‘word clouds’ from text that you provide. It’s a free resource and you can use the image that Wordle creates however you like.

You can create your own Wordle word cloud from words you type in or from entering your blog domain name.

Here’s one I created entering in some words that relate to PodCamp Ireland.

So how might you use your Wordle word cloud. Here are a few ideas:

Add your Wordle tag cloud to your website or blog side bar to depict what subjects you cover

Create your own T-shirts for a live event or event your work team

Develop a Wordle tag cloud with all the names of the people who come to your next family get together (I might just do that for PodCamp Ireland 2008 so make sure that you get registered soon!)

Use your word cloud on business cards and correspondence cards

Feature your word cloud on the front of your workshop materials for the next training course you deliver

Use your Wordle on your book cover for that next best selling book you are writing

Depict your expertise with Wordle and create a Wordle CV as Robin Blandford has done

You may take a Wordle, put it on your book cover, your t-shirt, your campaign poster, what have you. You may get rich off it. Just tell people how you made the image, or, if you’re using one from the gallery, where you got it.

The only request of the developers of Wordle is that they ask tat you make sure that you tell people how you made your Wordle tag cloud image.

Take a look at what the Wordle word clouds of Irish bloggers Elly and Sinead have created.

What ideas do you have for your Wordle word cloud?

Are you concerned that you are too old to learn to podcast? Or even too young to learn to podcast?

Earlier this year my 7 year old daughter had a project for school - to record someone from her family and interview them about school life in the ‘olden days’.

Well unfortunately for her, other than her parents (who at times feel ancient), she only has one surviving grandparent and that’s her Granny who lives in England.

So how was she going to complete her project?

Granny is well into her eighties and does get confused at times, so we put a little plan into action.

Elisha drafted her questions and then asked her dad to phone Granny with the questions and to ‘book a time’ for her interview the next day. This gave Granny time to write her self a few notes to remind herself what to cover in the ‘interview’.

The next day, Elisha interviewed her Granny and recorded the call, which we then made into a CD and she used the information she had gleened to write up her report.

Now this wasn’t quite a podcast, but it was a great exercise for her and she was very proud to have recorded her own CD since she often listened to me being played back through the car stereo when I used to broadcast a live radio show.

I read recently that in the UK that this September, the first qualification in podcasting is to be established where students will learn how to make audio and video podcasts.

The course is to be awarded by the NCFE (the National Council for Further Education).

David Grailey, chief executive of the NCFE, stated:

Podcasting is fast becoming a part of everyday life - vicars are delivering sermons via podcasts, police departments are launching ‘crimewatch’ video podcasts and schools and colleges are recording lessons via podcasts. It’s therefore vital that we offer people both an understanding and the skills to utilise this technology.

The article also reported that podcasting in the UK has grown to a population size of 18% and awareness of podcasting at 70%, which seems much higher than my experience in Ireland. Usually at the seminars and events I speak at with regular business leaders well under 20% would have come across the term podcasting.

And remember we are looking forward to meeting podcasters young and old at the forthcoming PodCamp Ireland. In my books you are never too young to start podcasting! And it’s a simple and wonderful way for us to record family events and conversations.

I only wish I’d had the same opportunity as Elisha some 30 years ago when my Granny was alive.
